History 2002: EMC Lands Big Fish as CTO

Mark Lewis, 40, was until recently the head of storage at Compaq. Following the company’s merger with Hewlett-Packard, however, he found himself relegated to the position of VP WW marketing and solutions, under Howard Elias, whom the companies preferred to oversee the merger of their storage activities.

Not surprisingly, he wasted no time accepting an offer from EMC as CTO and EVP of new ventures, reporting directly to CEO Joe Tucci.

He will replace Jim Rothnie, retiring, who joined EMC in 1995 before being named CTO in 2000.

The Symmetric company also appointed David Goulden, 43, as EVP of global marketing and business development. Goulden was a former colleague of Tucci (to whom he also reports) at Wang Global, and will take over for Dave Donatelli, who was promoted last November to executive VP of storage platforms.

For some time now, EMC shareholders have been indicating that they would like to see more independent people on the board, and not just relatives of the founding Egan family or their friends. Gail Deegan, 55, CFO at publisher Houghton Mifflin, will thus fill the seat vacated by Joseph Oliveri last year.
