History 2001: Ruettgers Moves Up to Chairman

Was CEO since 1992 and replaced by Joe Tucci.

Chairman Mike Ruettgers, 57, had been CEO of EMC since January 1992, and will remain one of the legendary figures of the industry.

Since he once confided to us that he enjoyed cooking, and since he should now have more free time on his hands, we wish him every success with his specialty dish, coq au vin.

He joined the company in 1988 as EVP of operations and was promoted president and CEO in 1991.

When he assumed the latter 2 positions, EMC was hovering at $260 million in annual revenues, while the company just closed 2000 at $8.9 billion.

Henceforth, he will focus his energies on strategic business and technology directions, while Joe Tucci has the unenviable task of replacing Ruettgers.

Joe Tucci came to EMC only a year ago, as president and COO, leaving behind the CEO position at Wang Global.

Ruettgers replaces co-founder Dick Egan as COB. Note that Dick’s wife, Maureen, has also retired from the board, which meanwhile adds Tucci.
