Acquisition of Violin by Archer StorCentric
Fifth one in 2 years
This is a Press Release edited by StorageNewsletter.com on October 30, 2020 at 2:13 pmStorCentric, Inc. announced the acquisition of Violin Systems LLC, in software-defined all-flash storage solutions.
With an ability to offer performance on commodity infrastructure, the Violin Systems portfolio of all-flash NVMe SSD-based architecture expands StorCentric’s all-flash offerings. Enterprise customers will now be able to address any performance, scale and economic needs of their diverse workloads with a comprehensive all-flash storage portfoliot. The acquisition expands the StorCentric portfolio to now cover all enterprise workload demands.
“Our vision at StorCentric is to offer a complete portfolio of data management technologies that support growing enterprises’ needs,” commented Mihir Shah, StorCentric CEO. “Violin fits perfectly into our solutions roadmap, a mid-point between our Nexsan and Vexata all-flash offerings. As a prominent name in the AFA market, we aim to build on its track record of innovation.”
With low price performance and scale, Violin has moved its storage architecture from a historically proprietary hardware architecture to a software architecture with standard x86 servers and SSDs. This architectural change accelerates product cycles and reduces the amount of investment needed for new product development, while increasing velocity. Violin’s acquisition of X-IO technologies added space efficiency with de-duplication and proactive monitoring. This technology has been integrated into Violin’s offerings for over 18 months.
“The acquisition provides Violin customers with streamlined access to a robust portfolio of data management solutions, backed by StorCentric’s world-class support organization,” said Todd Oseth, Violin Systems president and CEO. “StorCentric’s customers will benefit from the availability of Violin’s all-flash NVMe product for their demanding performance-critical applications at a highly competitive price point.”
StorCentric will continue to invest in Violin’s all-flash technology development with the goal of achieving product offerings that align with customers’ changing needs from traditional workloads, to emerging AI/ML environments, to shifting IT operational models.
To ensure a seamless integration, day-to-day sales contacts, operations and customer support at Violin will remain intact.

Violin has a complicated and tough history.
Violin Memory was founded in 2005 as Violin Technologies by Donpaul Stephens and Jon Bennett in Iselin, NJ. Series A financing valued over $10 million was raised in 2010. Two more rounds of financing in 2011 raised an additional $75 million. Corporate investors included Juniper Networks and Toshiba America Electronic Components (TAEC). It was based in Mountain View, CA at this time. Series D financing of $80 million in March 2012 to reach a total of $186 million, was led by SAP Ventures (arm of SAP AG), and included Highland Capital, GSV and others. Samsung and Imation were also among the investors. The reported valuation was over $800 million. Violin Memory's IPO in September 2013, raised $162 million.
In late 2016, the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Quantum Partners, a private investment fund controlled by Soros Fund Management, provided a lifeline in April 2017 when it bought the company, changed the name to Violin Systems, and elevated Ebrahim Abbasi from COO to CEO. It changes its business model from a proprietary AFA hardware to software-defined storage based on standard x86 servers and SSDs, with no more success. It has acquired X-IO on November 12, 2018. On October 2019, it has a new CEO, Todd Oseteh - replacing famous storage veteran Mark Lewis -, and eliminates San Jose, CA, headquarters - to less costly Colorado Springs research and development center -, as well as executive staff to cut spending.
