Predictions of Arcserve for 2020

Beware ongoing ransomware threat, minimizing IT downtime through CDP, hyperconverged to bring simplification and automation

Below are 3 trends Mick Bradley, VP EMEA, Arcserve LLC, will see as trending in 2020.

1/ Beware the ongoing ransomware threat
It’s no secret that ransomware is one of the biggest cybersecurity threats facing businesses, and this isn’t set to change over the coming years. Cybersecurity Ventures predicts that ransomware damage costs will be 57X more in 2021 than they were in 2015, rising from $11.5 billion in 2019 to $20 billion in 2021.

In response to the threat of ransomware and other forms of cyber-attack, IT professionals will have to simplify their approach to security in 2020 by deploying an integrated, multi-layered threat prevention solution. Integrating threat prevention technologies with onsite and offsite BC will enable businesses to incorporate backup, recovery and threat prevention into one solution, thereby increasing their IT resiliency.

Modern offerings give businesses the tools to neutralise ransomware by combining DR, application availability and endpoint protection in one solution – all augmented by AI and deep learning technologies. With the ability to detect both known and unknown malware, businesses can protect their data and set themselves up for a ransomware-free future.

2/ Minimising IT downtime through CDP
Journal-based recovery, where the solution maintains a log of all changes to data and applications, is now a key component of data protection. These changes are copied and replicated to a separate location in real-time, enabling users to revert back to when the data was last known to be good.

This ability is particularly useful in the case of a corruption event or physical system failure and will be invaluable to businesses over the coming months. As such, CDP and replication will continue to gain momentum in the new year – especially in the online retail world where cloud applications are used in mission-critical solutions.

3/ Hyperconverged will bring simplification and automation
In 2020, sprawling IT environments will continue to grow in complexity. Despite the complex nature of today’s infrastructures, companies are resorting to using two or more backup solutions, further adding to the complexity they’re attempting to unpick. Going forward, companies will have to use a different approach.

Hyperconverged infrastructure will be touted as one solution to the complexity issue. The problem is that in many cases, it introduces new technology and concepts that, in turn, require additional training. Only once the workforce has been equipped with the necessary knowledge will it effectively promote simplification and automation.
