DataCore MaxParallel For Faster SQL Server Transaction Processing

Company now in compute and not only storage

At Microsoft Ignite, DataCore Software Corp. launches the first of its new line of database optimization products for high-velocity transaction processing and real-time analytics.

MaxParallel for SQL Server is available in the Azure Marketplace as well as through DataCore-authorized partners.

The plug-and-play product supports SQL Server 2016, 2014, 2012 and 2008 running on-premises and in the cloud.

Applications such as e-commerce, ERP, high-frequency trading, inventory optimization and fault/threat detection, as well as newer workloads for digital initiatives such as IoT, stand to benefit the most from this new offering.

These database-intensive applications often exhibit sluggish behavior when bombarded by numerous simultaneous requests from live consumers and real-time software processes. MaxParallel for SQL Server removes key resource contention in multi-core servers, enabling OLTP and Online Analytical Processing (OLAP) to be far more productive and responsive under such peak loads.

No additional hardware or re-programming is necessary to realize the enhanced customer experience.

MaxParallel is a game changer,” said George Teixeira, CEO and president, DataCore. “Time is money, and doing more work in parallel not only reduces costs – it delivers a compelling value proposition by shortening the time to process transactions, generate reports and analyze trends, so businesses can be more responsive and outpace their competition.”

Early results
Early MaxParallel users driving high-transaction workloads have reported 1.2x to 3x quicker response times, 20% to 60% more transactions completed, and 1.5x to 2x faster times to generate reports.

Tyreworld Ltd, an online distributor of tires, has been running the software in production since June 2017.

Real-time stock level updates, inventory transfers and price sheet updates take a fraction of the time with DataCore MaxParallel for SQL Server, enabling us to offer the most competitive products to our customers,” said Manuel Hanke, IT manager, Tyreworld GMBH. “The plug-and-play software makes our database run insanely fast. It has the potential to change our business overnight.”

A number of SQL Server partners have also had a chance to preview the software prior to launch.

Joachim Dreher, CTO of Desk Software and Consulting GmbH, a Platinum Sage partner, added: “We tested MaxParallel on SQL Server 2016, not expecting much, since it is already one of the best optimized database solutions in the world. We were really surprised that DataCore improved productivity by over 30%.”

Derivative of R&D from DataCore’s Advanced Storage Services
The technology at the heart of MaxParallel grew from the company’s earlier research work in the storage optimization area.

Roni Putra, DataCore CTO, explained: “MaxParallel software was born out of the R&D work we’ve been doing with applications overwhelmed by very high data rates. We initially came at it from the storage end of the problem, and uncovered some key choke points inside the host – well before storage factors into the picture. It became quickly apparent that our Parallel I/O technology could solve the resource contention problems responsible for serial database access, even when the database does a good job of parallelizing the requests.”

MaxParallel does not rely on any of DataCore’s storage products. It is a separate, freestanding product. Nevertheless, the company’s SANsymphony and Hyper-Converged Virtual SAN software provide shared storage services that can further enhance database application performance, as well as the performance of other mixed workloads.

Standard and Enterprise editions of MaxParallel for SQL Server are priced at approximately 15% of the suggested retail price of the corresponding editions of SQL Server. The software can be licensed on a subscription (hourly) or a perpetual basis according to the number of processor cores on the SQL Server host.

Comments

StorageNewsletter.com was the first to reveal MaxParallel, the new software from DataCore, two weeks ago (see below) and just officially released.

Parallel I/O was announced one year ago and integrated into SANsymphony, it' not the case for MaxParallel for computing only. Maybe DataCore will have to change its name into ComputeCore in the future even if software-defined storage SANsymphony will remain it flagship product for years to come.

"Forget storage", claims at a press conference DataCore's president and CEO since February 1998 after more than 8 years at Encore Computer, justly a pioneer in parallel computing and ceasing operations in 1999.

Currently DataCore has only two OEMs (Fujitsu and Lenovo) and here "we go to the database guys."

Compared to the article already on this web site, we can add that shortening your time to process transactions, generate reports and analyze trends, MaxParallel, a software-only located on application server between OS and databases accelerating SQL across multiple CPUs, and responding quicker to multiple requests in parallel, will more costs around 15% the SQL Server recommended retail price, $4,000 to $5,000 for the standard edition and $14,000 with two cores for the enterprise edition, or $0.06 per hour on cloud as already revealed.

It is available for SQL Server 012, 2014 and 2016 locally or in cloud to begin, then for Oracle, and maybe Amazon and SAP.

For IDC SQL Server held 22.7% of the relational database management systems software market in 2016, representing 11% Y/Y growth.

The problem here is that DataCore is considered as a storage company and needs a broader vision, meaning more investments.

This firm is a special company in the storage industry being no far from 20 years old and remaining private. It never exploded even if 10,000 deployments of SANsymphony has been realized .

"Annual revenue are between $50 million and $70 million and profitable since ten years," according to Texeira," with 40% to 50% of sales in Germany, more than in USA."

The company has recruited several people this year for South Europe. On its side France, with Audrey Dupont sales manager for the south of the country and Pascal Le Cunff, director of South Europe, saw revenue increasing 34% in 2015, 35% in 2016 and a growth of 37% of project wins in 1H17 with help of 116 resellers.

The firm could filed for an IPO but Texeira is not sure about his decision, maybe next year: "It costs around $20 million of cash to enter on the stock exchange market that prefers much faster growing companies even if not profitable at all."
