WD First to Ship Two-Platters 2.5-Inch 500GB HDD

Utilizing industry-leading 250 GB-per-platter technology, the new WD Scorpio Blue 500 GB and 400 GB SATA hard drives are designed for notebook computers and portable storage devices.
WD Scorpio Blue delivers high-performance with a 3 Gb/s transfer rate, while including proprietary features that make the drive extraordinarily quiet, while running at cool operating temperatures. The WD Scorpio Blue 500 GB is the highest capacity 2.5-inch, standard form-factor (9.5mm) hard drive shipping-to-date, and is developed for use in OEM notebook platforms that offer the highest storage capacities to the market.

Price and Availability
WD Scorpio Blue 500 GB (model WD5000BEVT) and the 400 GB (model WD4000BEVT) hard drives are shipping now through select distributors and resellers. Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) for the WD Scorpio Blue 500 GB is $219.99 USD and the 400 GB is $189.99 USD. WD Scorpio Blue hard drives are covered by a 3-year limited warranty.

Areal density is a record 400Gb per square inch. Formerly, the highest-capacity WD notebook HDDs was at 320GB.
Seagate is the only other manufacturer to have announced a 9.5mm device at 500GB with two disks (rotating at 5,400 or 7,200rpm), but they are not in production.
The other 500GB units from Hitachi GST and Fujitsu uses three platters and consequently are packed in a 2.5-inch form factor with a 12.5mm height.
Samsung find a way to put three disks in a 9.5mm half-terabyte HDD, the SpinPoint M6, rotating at 5,400rpm.
