On September 3, 2008, Mozy, an EMC company, announced a global partnership to provide an online data backup service. The new service will be available on all new Lenovo ThinkPad SL series notebooks, which are designed to meet the needs of small business professionals. Mozy also announced the opening of Mozy's international data center in Dublin, Ireland. In its press release, EMC stated that the "new data center will address certain government regulations pertaining to electronic data storage and encryption export restrictions."
This could be a major coup for EMC. Consider the fact that Dell, HP, IBM and to a much lesser extent, Sun have the ability to reach the PC user through their workstations, desktop PCs, and notebook PCs. Yet EMC, which only manufactures storage solutions and has no obvious route to the desktop user compared to its competitors, may have just found a way to capture the mindshare of PC users via its recent Mozy acquisition and this partnership with Lenovo.
Mozy offers a solution that is optimized for the small to medium business professional, especially those who are frequently on the road. In recent months, HP's Upline, a competitor to EMC's Mozy service has suffered outages; Dell's DataSafe has had a lackluster reception; and IBM, since pulling out of the desktop/notebook business by selling its PC division to Lenovo, has concentrated on the enterprise online storage market through its Arsenal Digital acquisition.
But that is not to say that Mozy is focused purely on the SMB and consumer play. In its announcement to the analyst community, Mozy highlighted the success that it has had with the General Electric Company (GE). GE has made a substantial investment in Mozy to backup data for its mobile employees. According to Mozy, GE selected Mozy for its flexibility, performance, and cost effectiveness.
As mentioned above, Mozy also announced the opening of their Dublin data center. Ireland is a smart choice for EMC. As a member of the European Union (EU), it has the ability to reach most of Western Europe, and many eastern European states. It also has the geographic proximity to the United Kingdom (UK), which is important when trying to address the British market.
The Lenovo Online Data Backup service will be in Ireland, United Kingdom, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Philippines, Singapore, United States, and Canada. This accounts for over one-third of the world's personal computer sales through 2011.
At the end of the day, EMC may not have all the pieces as does its competitors, but it seems to have found a solid strategy for creating its cloud.
