SpiderOak Offers 10GB of Free Storage for a Year to Ex-Subscribers of Linkup
Rescuing jilted Linkup customers
This is a Press Release edited by StorageNewsletter.com on August 19, 2008 at 3:58 pmOnline backup/storage provider SpiderOak will provide 10GB of free storage for a year to ex-subscribers of The Linkup, a competing service that closed last week after losing access to customer data. SpiderOak is extending the offer to the first 2,000 abandoned Linkup users who sign up for the SpiderOak service.
Those who take advantage of the offer will also gain additional functionality not available from Linkup or any other online storage service provider. SpiderOak enables users to store, backup, access and share files — with sync services to be introduced later this year — from any combination of Windows, Mac and Linux computers as well as external storage media. The service’s advanced de-duping cuts backup/sync time by as much as 90% as well as reducing storage costs by conserving space.
Other unique SpiderOak features include perpetual file and version storage even for older and deleted files, the ability to aggregate multiple devices on one account to take advantage of bulk storage rates, and an industry-first no-password-storage security policy that prevents even SpiderOak employees from viewing user information including file and folder names.
SpiderOak protects customers against data loss by designing and operating its entire data center storage infrastructure without the third-party involvement that derailed Linkup. In addition, SpiderOak’s central storage network is engineered to provide multiple redundancy strategies, including point in time recovery to protect even against human mistakes such as accidental deletions by an administrator. An automated stress testing and verification system continually monitors production server operation to ensure immediate detection of any malfunctions.
Standard SpiderOak pricing is free for the first 2GB of storage, $10/month up to 20GB and $5/month for each additional 10GB increment for an unlimited number of devices.
Former subscribers of Linkup can receive their free 10GB account by downloading and installing the SpiderOak application and entering the promotion code ‘linkup’ when prompted during the new user setup process. Standard pricing applies for more than 10GB of data.
