Storix System Backup Administrator Now Supports Solaris

In addition to Linux and AIX

Storix, Inc., in Linux and Unix backup and Adaptable System Recovery (ASR) solutions, announced the release of System Backup Administrator (SBAdmin) v 6.3 that now supports Solaris systems. In addition to Linux and AIX, SBAdmin v6.3 users now have backup and full system recovery capabilities on their Solaris systems as well. ASR enables backups to be easily adapted to fit newer or virtual systems when identical hardware is not available.

"Unix users were requesting the same ASR capabilities for Solaris that we already provide for Linux and AIX," said Anthony Johnson, Storix president. "Extending SBAdmin’s unique ability to record configuration information from Solaris systems, then easily replicate the configuration onto any new box, even on newer hardware or virtual systems, was the natural next step."

In contrast to ASR’s file-level backup technology that records configuration data down to a very detailed level, other backup and recovery solutions typically utilize unintelligent image-based technology that require the backup image be restored to the identical hardware and configuration. In many cases, finding identical hardware is difficult; and only gets harder as the hardware ages.

"The benefits of SBAdmin, for Solaris System Administrators, is not limited to unplanned tasks such as disaster recovery," said Manuel Altamirano, Storix director of sales and marketing. "Solaris System administrators say they want the convenience that ASR offers them in their regularly planned tasks too, such as: hardware migration/upgrade and cloning/provisioning of high volumes of systems."

SBAdmin combines an easy-to-use graphical user interface (GUI) for daily backup management with ASR, the most complete and flexible full-system recovery process on the market. Systems can be booted from CDROM or network boot images, and installed from a local or remote backup, including remote disk files or tapes. The system recovery process takes a backup and adapts it to the hardware detected during installation, allowing the user to reconfigure the storage configuration as they wish. The complete restore from bare-metal can be managed locally or remotely and can be completed in minutes. If the software detects differences between the backup and newly detected hardware, it will make recommendations, such as selection of new disks or automated shrinking of file-systems.

Storix is unmatched in customer satisfaction and value, offering free annual maintenance and free 24-hour technical support. The company also provides free product updates throughout the life of the current version, and existing customers can upgrade at a discounted rate. Optional features of SBAdmin include Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) integration, backup data encryption with simplified key management, Oracle database backup integration, and Windows and Mac OSX data backups. SBAdmin supports Solaris SPARC, all Intel-based (32/64-bit) systems, IBM pSeries (32/64-bit) and HP Itanium 2 systems.
