Vates Named a Niche Player in Gartner Magic Quadrant for Server Virtualization Platforms

First-time inclusion marks an important milestone for the independent, open-source virtualization provider as organizations reassess their VMware strategies

Vates, a company behind Vates Virtualization Management Stack (Vates VMS) and the open-source virtualization platform XCP-ng, announced that it has been included for the first time as a niche player in the Gartner Magic Quadrant for Server Virtualization Platforms.Vates Tech LogoVates is one of seventeen vendors included in the 2026 report, marking an important milestone in the company’s evolution from an open-source virtualization project into a global enterprise infrastructure provider. The inclusion marks Vates’ evolution: an open-source virtualization company becoming a recognized global enterprise virtualization player, as it continues to scale into larger and more demanding environments.

This positioning comes at a time when organizations are reassessing their virtualization strategies following major changes in the VMware ecosystem. For Vates, Gartner’s inclusion is significant not simply because of its spot in the quadrant, but because it recognizes Vates as a meaningful participant in the global virtualization market.

“Our inclusion in the Gartner Magic Quadrant marks a new stage in Vates’ growth. We have spent more than ten years building both the technology and the company capable of meeting the needs of demanding organizations around the world. Being evaluated today alongside the leading global players in virtualization represents an important milestone for us,” said Olivier Lambert, CEO and co-founder, Vates.

From Open Source to Enterprise Infrastructure
Vates, headquartered in Europe, started as an open-source company, and this remains at the core of its technology and its business model today.Built around the XCP-ng platform and Xen Orchestra, Vates has progressively developed a complete enterprise virtualization stack.

It preserves the transparency and flexibility of its open-source foundation while adding the enterprise capabilities organizations need to operate business-critical infrastructure at scale, including validated updates, long-term support (LTS) releases, enterprise-grade support, professional services, and migration assistance.

Backed by commercial support and services for production and business-critical environments, Vates delivers an open, enterprise-grade virtualization platform that gives organizations greater control over their infrastructure, rather than simply a lower-cost alternative to VMware.

Today, Vates serves more than 1,000 paying customers globally, including large enterprises, public-sector organizations, universities, cloud providers, and other organizations running critical infrastructure. Its technology is increasingly being deployed in larger and more demanding enterprise environments beyond its traditional open-source community base.

Vates’ approach gives organizations an alternative to increasingly complex virtualization licensing models. Its commercial offering uses a straightforward per-host model, giving organizations greater control over their infrastructure without the licensing complexity associated with per-core models.

Following its inclusion in the Gartner Magic Quadrant, Vates is now preparing its next phase of international growth, with continued investment in its technology, operations and enterprise virtualization platform.
