WD and Tohoku University Launch AI Data Infrastructure Lab to Accelerate the Future of AI Storage

Western Digital Corp., a storage foundation of the AI-driven data economy, and Tohoku University announced the establishment of the WD × Tohoku University AI Data Infrastructure Lab, a joint research institute dedicated to developing the next generation of storage technologies and cultivating the talent needed to support the continued growth of AI infrastructure.Located at the Research Institute of Electrical Communication (RIEC) on Tohoku University’s Katahira Campus in Sendai, Japan, the institute brings together complementary expertise spanning advanced recording materials, device physics, and storage systems engineering.

The rapid adoption of AI is driving exponential growth in data generation, and hard disk drives (HDDs) remain the foundation for storing the vast majority of that data. According to IDC, approximately 80% of the data accumulated in cloud data centers today resides on HDDs, underscoring the need for technologies that dramatically increase recording capacity while lowering total cost of ownership. By bringing together WD’s data infrastructure expertise with Tohoku University’s world-class academic research and talent, the WD × Tohoku University AI & Data Infrastructure Lab is uniquely positioned to develop even more innovations for a scalable AI data ecosystem.

The technologies that will power the AI-driven data economy over the next decade will increasingly be built through collaboration between industry and academia, making partnerships like this essential to accelerating innovation.

The institute started operating on July 1, 2026, and will extend through June 30, 2029, under RIEC Tohoku University, which promotes collaborative research and human resource development through close partnerships between academia and industry.
