IBM Releases IBM Storage Ceph 9.0
Faster Erasure Code, additional EC schemes, VMware SRM integration, less then 5 seconds failover and dynamic single bucket scaling
By Philippe Nicolas | January 30, 2026 at 2:00 pmIBM Storage Ceph, Software defined storage delivering Block, Object and File storage services, with an enterprise level support and updates.
IBM Storage Ceph can deliver File, Block and Object storage services from within one single technology stack, supporting clients to cut CAPEX and OPEX.
A complete IBM software defined storage platform, consumable as a service, or as software subscription, optional available with IBM Storage Ready Nodes hardware servers, as complete storage offering.
IBM Storage Ready Nodes for Ceph
IBM optionally offers IBM Storage Ready Nodes for IBM Storage Ceph clients.
- Storage Ready Nodes concern server hardware, which has been fully tested and qualified for IBM Storage Ceph implementation and production use cases
- Storage Ready Nodes for Ceph enable IBM clients for a complete storage software- and hardware solution experience
- Storage Ready node feature- and capacity choices are available within multiple configuration choices and options, depending on a client’s use cases and use patterns
- On-site implementations are feasible by IBM expert labs consulting services
Deliverables with this IBM Storage Ceph 9.0 release update:Storage Ceph RADOS core updates
- Fast Erasure Code for Block and File: For File and Block use cases, supporting extent overwrites. Extent overwrites allow for only the modified portions of an object to be updated. This minimizes I/O operations, including associated overhead
- Broadened schemes for Erasure Coding: Support has been added for EC 5+2 and EC 6+2 schemes on top of already existing Erasure Coding capabilities: EC 8+3, EC 8+2, EC 4+2
These are selectable EC profiles, optimized for different type of workloads or situations. Clients can choose a preferred profile for HA, performance of cost-effectiveness. Erase Coding profiles in Storage Ceph provides flexibility, efficiency, performance, durability and simplified management.
- Reduced I/O pause with OSD failure
OSD Failover happens in less than 5s. Fast failover ensures services remain available, reducing risks of downtime
Storage Ceph NVMe/TCP Block storage updates
- VMware SRM Integration
Create Storage Replication Adapters that pass array replication and failover commands to Ceph APIs
This enables for abstract and automated failover and failback processes, ensuring that business critical applications can be quickly recovered in event if a disaster - VMware vSphere Plugin update
Storage volume Snapshot and Clone handling, all within one workflow
In earlier versions, snapshotting and cloning were separate operations inside the vSphere plug-in - VSAN migration to Ceph NVMe/TCP
Starts Ceph on Virtual machines, supporting VMs as they migrate off of VSAN and onto Ceph NVMeoF
This functionality enables clients to decouple their VM storage from the ESX compute platform - Grafana dashboards in vSphere plugin
Grafana dashboards for performance and health have been added to the platform, now visible and approachable from inside the vSphere plug-in - Support for 4K namespaces
Ability to have 4096 namespaces, compared to 2048 namespaces in previous releases of IBM Storage Ceph - NVMe/TCP less than 5 seconds failover time
Impacts the failover window for Gateways and beaconing
It addresses requirements for database workloads on NVMe/TCP block storage
Storage Ceph CephFS File storage updates
- SMB Multichannel
Multiple physical network connections can be established automatically between an SMB Gateway and SMB clients
Multi-channel requires multiple NICs on both SMB-Gateway and SMB-client end
Increases SMB throughput by adding additional NIC’s to broaden bandwidth - NFS over TLS (Tech Preview)
TLS encrypts data between clients and servers, ensuring privacy and integrity while preventing eavesdropping and tampering
Ceph Object storage, RADOS Gateway (RGW) updates
Dynamic Single Bucket Scale
- Seamless Bucket growth, without write pauses. Smoother transitions and growth without needs to plan for downtime
- Object Retrieval from Glacier S3 Tiers
Additional improvements have been made to IBM Storage Ceph’s
policy-based Archive/Retrieval feature - Multi-active NFS Gateways HAProxy
Ability to enable multiple NFS-Gateways to be active and connected via Virtual IP
Provided and managed by HAProxy - Enhanced Bucket operational insights
Including per user and per bucket usage information in Storage Ceph’s Prometheus dashboard information
Management User Interface Updates
- RGW Bucket Notification in User Interface
Enables clients for simplified configuration and usage of S3 Bucket notifications in an easy workflow through the Dashboard UI - Local Storage Class management in User Interface
Allows clients for Local Storage Classes management in the Dashboard UI
Local Storage classes refer to an RGW RADOS data pool in the Storage Ceph Cluster
RGW Multi-site section offers an option to configure placement targets outside multi-site replication - Glacier Storage Class management
Lifecycle policies allow configuration of data movement from one Storage Class to another
Amazon Glacier storage is a relevant as candidate target store for bucket lifecycle policy destinations
This feature enables clients to configure AWS Glacier as optional target - SMB performance and metrics
Administrators can check Server Message Block performance graphics to monitor SMB services
Overall health state, latencies, and total throughputs
Individual share throughputs, number of clients and users who are connected to a share - Storage Ceph Hardware monitoring
The functionality offers awareness of eventual hardware issues that could impact Storage Ceph’s performance or reliability
