DataLocker Sentry 5 Encrypted USB Flash Drive Achieves FIPS 140-3 Level 3 Validation

And introduces smart card authentication for Federal-grade portable security

DataLocker, Inc., provider in hardware-encrypted data protection, announced that its Sentry 5 encrypted USB flash drive has achieved FIPS 140-3 Level 3 validation, the most current and rigorous cryptographic standard issued by the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Sentry5 Fips140 3In parallel, the company introduced native smart card authentication for the Sentry 5, enabling support for Common Access Cards (CAC) and Personal Identity Verification (PIV) credentials – the authentication standard required across U.S. federal agencies and their contractors.

Together, these advancements establish the Sentry 5 as one of the most secure, compliance-ready portable storage solutions available for government, defense, and critical-infrastructure environments.

FIPS 140-3 Level 3 validation confirms that the Sentry 5’s cryptographic module meets the most stringent federal requirements for protecting sensitive and controlled data, including advanced physical-tamper resistance and hardened key protection. Coupled with a TAA-compliant, NATO-trusted supply chain, the Sentry 5 delivers assurance not only in cryptographic strength but also in manufacturing integrity and component provenance. With native CAC/PIV authentication, organizations can securely extend existing identity and access management infrastructure to removable media – enforcing hardware-based MFA while eliminating password-only risk and credential sprawl.

FIPS 140-3 Level 3 validation combined with smart card authentication represents a major leap forward in portable data security,” said Jay Kim, CEO, DataLocker. “Federal and enterprise organizations can now enforce true, hardware-based multi-factor authentication on removable media – aligned with Zero Trust principles – without changing how users authenticate day to day. It’s security that integrates seamlessly with the credentials they already carry.”

When managed through DataLocker SafeConsole, administrators can enforce a smart-card-only authentication policy, requiring users to authenticate with an issued CAC or PIV card and PIN before data access is granted. All authentication is performed directly on the device, ensuring protection even in offline, air-gapped, or classified environments.

The Sentry 5 also supports YubiKey PIV authentication, extending smart card–based MFA to commercial and enterprise organizations seeking stronger protection for sensitive data in transit.

About Sentry 5 Encrypted Flash Drive

Sentry5 Flash Drive

The Sentry 5 is a military-grade, TAA-compliant, hardware-encrypted USB 3.2 Gen 1 flash drive featuring AES 256-bit XTS mode encryption. Designed for durability and mission-critical use, it includes a rugged, waterproof enclosure and advanced security controls such as brute-force attack protection with automatic crypto-erase after 10 failed attempts. When paired with SafeConsole, organizations gain centralized policy enforcement, remote device management, and comprehensive audit reporting for compliance and governance requirements.
