IBC 2025: Disk Archive Launches New S3 COLD Interface for ALTO

Expanding Deep Archiving Capabilities for Media Workflows

At this year’s IBC 2025, Disk Archive Corporation will unveil its latest innovation for long-term media storage: a S3 COLD interface for its flagship archiving platform, ALTO.

This new feature delivers seamless, plug-and-play integration with the growing ecosystem of S3-compatible media asset management (MAM) and workflow orchestration platforms, enabling broadcasters, post-production houses, and content owners to implement deep archiving strategies with greater flexibility and efficiency.
The S3 COLD interface is designed to support low-cost, low-power, long-term storage of media assets, making it ideal for deep archive use cases where content needs to be preserved securely and with ease of access. Unlike traditional cloud-based S3 storage, ALTO’s S3 COLD implementation runs on-premise, offering the cost predictability, data sovereignty, and performance control that media organizations increasingly demand.

Seamless Integration with S3-Enabled Workflows
Over the past few years, S3 has become the de facto standard for object-based storage in the media industry. Its widespread adoption by MAM, PAM, and orchestration platforms has created a need for S3-compatible deep archive solutions that can plug directly into existing workflows. Disk Archive’s new S3 COLD interface addresses this need, allowing ALTO to function as a native S3 target for archiving, without requiring custom development or middleware.

This new capability complements ALTO’s existing suite of standard interfaces and native integrations, which span over 60 media production platforms across asset management, storage management, and workflow automation. A full list of ALTO’s integration partners is available here.

What Is S3 COLD and Why It Matters
S3 COLD refers to an S3-compatible interface optimized for cold storage, where data is retained for long periods with minimal access. In media archiving, this is particularly valuable for:
  • Preserving high-resolution masters and raw footage
  • Meeting regulatory and compliance requirements
  • Reducing cloud storage costs
  • Supporting disaster recovery and business continuity
Unlike cloud-based cold storage tiers, ALTO’s S3 COLD interface allows organizations to maintain local control over their archives while benefiting from the same API compatibility and workflow simplicity that S3 offers.

ALTO: A Smarter Alternative to LTO and Cloud
Disk Archive’s ALTO platform is a disk-based deep archive solution designed as a compelling alternative to LTO tape and cloud storage. Key benefits include:
  • Zero migration architecture – new disk capacities are adopted instantly, eliminating costly data migrations
  • Low power consumption – ALTO consumes as little as 200W per 1.5PB, supporting sustainability goals
  • Scalable and modular design – easily expands with growing archive needs
  • Hybrid-ready – supports standalone, cloud-integrated, and tape-integrated workflows
  • Green credentials – energy-efficient and future-proof, with no robotic tape handling or cloud egress fees
With the addition of S3 COLD for deep archiving, ALTO now offers even greater interoperability, making it easier for media organizations to implement hybrid archive infrastructures that combine the best of disk, tape, and cloud.
