MegWare’s HA Storage Solution with Xinnor xiRAID Secures #3 Position Among All Production Installations WW in IO500 Rankings
Solution submitted by MegWare is in production at Erlangen National HPC Center (NHR@FAU), Germany
This is a Press Release edited by StorageNewsletter.com on June 17, 2025 at 2:02 pmXinnor Ltd. announced that its xiRAID technology has achieved exceptional results in the latest IO500 research list published at ISC High Performance 2025.
The solution submitted by MegWare in production at Erlangen National HPC Center (NHR@FAU), Germany, secured the #1 position among Lustre-based solutions and a #3 ranking in the overall IO500 production list.
The winning submission demonstrated outstanding performance across multiple benchmarks, achieving a total IO500 score of 838.99 using just a ½ rack solution – a feat that sets it apart from traditional large-scale deployments. Key performance highlights include:
- IOR Easy Read: 1,798.77GB/s
- IOR Easy Write: 811.33GB/s
- MDtest Easy Stat: 8,221.83 KIOs
- Find Operations: 3,016.99 KIOs
- Overall Bandwidth: 438.62GB/s
- Overall IOPS: 1,604.84 KIOs
This achievement demonstrates that exceptional performance can be achieved with significantly reduced infrastructure footprint.
The production-ready system at NHR@FAU demonstrates that organizations no longer need to choose between performance, reliability and efficiency.
This compact deployment model offers several critical advantages:
- No single point of failure. The solution can survive multiple drive failures and server failures with data loss and downtime.
- Achieving exceptional performance. Significantly lower power requirements compared to traditional large-scale cluster deployments.
- No usage of any proprietary hardware, avoiding vendor lock-in and minimizing the cost of deployment and its TCO.
- Reduced infrastructure, cooling, and operational costs.
- Currently operational at NHR@FAU, serving real-world research workloads.
This latest achievement builds upon xiRAID’s previous success at SC24, where a MegWare submission featuring xiRAID technology secured the 2nd position among Lustre-based solutions in the 10-node research category, ranking #34 in the 10-node research list and #44 in the general IO500 research list. This time, Xinnor and MegWare reached the top of the list with a production deployment with no single point of failure, demonstrating the continued advancement and optimization of xiRAID technology.
“We are thrilled to see xiRAID technology achieve this unprecedented level of performance in the IO500 rankings,” said Davide Villa, CRO, Xinnor. “Securing the #1 position among Lustre solutions and #3 overall represents not just a technical achievement, but validation of our commitment to pushing the boundaries of high-performance storage. This success, built on our collaboration with MEGWARE and FAU, demonstrates how innovative storage architecture can unlock new levels of computational capability for the research community.”
Markus Hilger, HPC engineer, MegWare, said “The exceptional performance achieved with xiRAID technology validates our approach to integrating cutting-edge storage solutions with traditional HPC infrastructure. This collaboration with Xinnor has enabled us to deliver unprecedented storage performance without any compromise on reliability to our research partners at FAU, and we’re excited to continue pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in high-performance computing storage.”
The winning submission utilized xiRAID’s advanced storage architecture in combination with the proven Lustre parallel file system, creating a solution optimized for both bandwidth-intensive and metadata-heavy workloads. This hybrid approach allows organizations to achieve exceptional performance across the diverse range of applications typical in modern HPC environments.
The xiRAID technology’s ability to excel in both sequential and random I/O patterns, as demonstrated by the benchmark results, makes it particularly well-suited for the complex, mixed workloads encountered in computational research, AI, and data analytics applications.
The IO500 benchmark is the premier global ranking system for high-performance storage solutions, evaluating systems across multiple dimensions including bandwidth, IOs, and metadata operations. The benchmark provides a comprehensive assessment of storage performance in real-world HPC scenarios and serves as the industry standard for comparing storage system capabilities.
