Vercel, Stepping into Storage, Launches Suite of Serverless Storage Options to Platform

Including Vercel KV scalable, durable, Redis-compatible database, Postgres serverless SQL database built for frontend cloud, and Vercel Blob to store files in cloud without heavy SDKs

Vercel, Inc., the frontend cloud provider offering tools to create a developer experience and a dynamic user experience, has launched a suite of serverless storage options to the platform, powered by the infrastructure providers.

With its new partnerships with Neon and Upstash, the company can offer users the power of SQL and Redis in a serverless way.

Why is Vercel stepping into storage?
The rise of serverless and cloud-native architectures has made it easier than ever to build and deploy applications at scale. With this shift, more developers are moving away from traditional, monolithic database architectures and embracing distributed databases that can scale and perform in the cloud.

As more applications move to the edge, there’s a growing need for data to be stored and accessed at the edge. By bringing databases to the edge, the company is enabling developers to access and serve data from anywhere in the world with low latency and high performance. The needs for a dynamic site are evolving and so are the needs of frontend developers. And by bringing databases to its platform, the firm is responding to the need for fast, efficient, and distributed data storage and access at the edge.

Below are 3 storage product offerings being launched:

  • Vercel KV: Scalable, durable, Redis-compatible database
One of the most common tools used by developers building web applications is a key-value store, like Redis. These databases can be used for rate limiting, session management, and application state. Vercel built a serverless Redis-compatible, easy-to-use, and highly durable database. With KV, frontend developers don’t need to manage scaling, instance sizes, or Redis clusters – it’s truly serverless. The company’s lightweight SDK works from Edge or ‘Serverless Functions’ and scales infinitely with a brand’s traffic. This durability is especially important in a serverless environment, where instances can spin up and down quickly. With Vercel KV, a brand’s data is always safe and available.

  • Vercel Postgres: Complex data made easy
The firm understands that for many developers, SQL is the preferred way of handling data, especially when it comes to complex data structures or relational data. The company has partnered with Neon, to introduce Vercel Postgres, a first serverless SQL database built for the frontend cloud. Now, companies get a managed, scalable, serverless, fault-tolerant database that delivers performance and low latency for your web applications. Vercel Postgres is designed to work with the Next.js App router and server components, which makes it to fetch data from the database to render dynamic content on the server.

  • Vercel Blob: Store files in cloud without heavy SDKs.
It is a fast, easy and efficient solution for storing files in the cloud. It provides a simple yet API for storage that is built entirely on top of web standards, without the need to configure buckets or implement heavy SDKs.
