History 2001: LSI to Buy American Megatrends RAID Activity LSI Logic

Including PCI-based RAID host adapter controllers

LSI Logic has been racking up acquisitions over the past year: Ark Research, IntraServer, DataPath Systems, Syntax.

This time, it is taking over the RAID business of American Megatrends, including its PCI-based RAID host adapter controllers.

AMI is a private company over 15 years of age, founded by its current chairman, Subramonian Shankar, among others, which has carved out a healthy share of the disk array controller market, but was never quite in a position to initiate an IPO.

More than 200 AMI employees, including engineers based in Norcross, GA, are included in the acquisition.

Note that, at the same time, LSI also decided to close its Colorado Springs manufacturing facility, which employs 500 people responsible for the manufacture of ASICs, HBAs and SCSI controllers, with consolidation planned in Gresham, OR and Tsukuba, Japan.
