R&D: Comment on ‘Emerging Approaches to DNA Storage, Challenges and Prospects

ACS Nano has published an article written by Patrizio Armeni, and Anna Gatti, LIFT Lab – SDA Bocconi School of Management.

Introduction: “Recently, a paper of Doricchi et al. was published in ACS Nano. (1) The authors provide an up-to-date review of the existing opportunities and barriers associated with ‘sequence-based’ and ‘structure-based’ DNA data storage. In this commentary, we focus on the business and societal perspectives of DNA data storage diffusion which are necessary for developing a comprehensive understanding of other opportunities and barriers that arise from nontechnological factors. Economic and cultural factors, indeed, are necessary complements to technological ones in shaping the diffusion path of innovations. From the business and societal perspectives, DNA data storage is, under many dimensions, a technology under development. The increasing rate of data production at individual and enterprise levels has led to increased demand for data storage solutions.
