History (1992): Sujata to Manufacture Seagate HDDs

In Bombay, India

Sujata Data Products Ltd. (Bombay, India) entered into a manufacturing agreement with Seagate Technology (Scotts Valley, CA) last October 1991.

The agreement will enable Sujata to produce 3 low-capacity models of Seagate’s HDDs at its new plant in Hyderabad, set up with an investment of $4.6 million.

Production was due to begin last December.

The models include the ST225, a 20MB 5.25-inch unit, the ST251, a 40MB 5.25-inch drive, and the ST157A, a 40MB 3.5-inch version.

Sujata, with sales of $5 million last year, is a manufacturer of floppy disk drives, which accounted for $3.84 million of the firm’s revenues.

The units are made in India with assistance from Teac of Japan. Sujata has already set up a $1.92 million repair center using Seagate sourced technology for board-level drive repair in Hyderabad.
