R&D: SHIP, Storage for Hybrid Interconnected Processors

In addition to complexity involved in using NVMe protocol, navigating file systems requires multiple serialized storage accesses and data processing between each access.

IEEE Xplore has published, in 2020 IEEE 28th Annual International Symposium on Field-Programmable Custom Computing Machines (FCCM) proceedings, an article written by Juan Camilo Vega, Qianfeng Clark Shen, and Paul Chow, Electrical and Computer Engineering University of Toronto, Toronto, Canada.

Abstract:Drivers for accessing storage are complex. In addition to the complexity involved in using the NVMe protocol, navigating filesystems requires multiple serialized storage accesses and data processing between each access. As a result, efforts to create storage drivers for FPGAs, so that FPGAs can directly access storage without help from a CPU, have either failed, require too many resources/time, or remove some of the functionality expected by storage users (such as removing the filesystem) [1], [2].
