Qumulo in France

To continue to compete in file systems for scale-out NAS vs. NetApp and mainly Isilon in country

A new office (not a subsidiary) has been opened last August, 1 by Qumulo, Inc. (name coming from vertical cloud cumulonimbus), headed by Vincent Gibert, sales manager, and Rodolphe Garcia, pre-sales consultant, being located in Clichy, suburb of Paris, France, and reporting to EMEA HQs near Cologne area, Germany

Both of them, as a lot of company’s employees, come from Isilon, (acquired by EMC for $2.25 billion in 2010), firm’s mainly competitor as well as NetApp.

A third employee will join them soon.

Qumulo is in indirect sales only, with a strong partnership with HPE.

First partners in France are Kairos, Mediapower Progiss, Mediatree, S-Cube et Newlode, Claranet ou Capgemini are also supposed to be recruited.

Qumulo claims 400 customers in the world, 90% of them following a competition with Isilon, including 3 in France: Illumination Mc Guff (groupe Universal), Dwarf Animation Studio (groupe Septeo) and Progiss.

The company employs 360 people in the world with first products shipped in 2015, then in 2017 in EMEA and 2019 in APAC

If we exclude niche solutions, Isilon is our true scale-out competitor but its transition from EMC to Dell has been a disaster in terms of support. This is why we are recovering Isilon customers“, said Gibert previously at Nutanix and Isilon.

Founded in 2012, the Seattle, WA-based enterprise data storage startup, offers file systems for scale-out NAS with 4 to 100 nodes and also commodity hardware when the client needs it.

Price is €0.20 to €0.60 per gross gigabyte with 3 years of subscription.

De-dupe or compression have not yet been implemented. “It’s on the roadmap,” said Dr. Stefan Radtke, Europe technical director, formerly at Dell EMC, Isilon and IBM, who started as employee #1 for Qumulo in EMEA.

Total financial funding amounts a huge $222.3 million in several rounds, firm’s valuation being above $1 billion, and a Qumulo’s rep said it is “profitable.”
