History (1990): Emerald Systems Acquires Digital Storage Systems

In real-time, continuous backup of valuable network computer data

Emerald Systems Corp. (San Diego, CA) announced it has acquired Digital Storage Systems Inc. (DDS) of Longmont, CO.

The move makes Emerald Systems enter into the market for real-time, continuous backup of valuable network computer data.

DDS was acquired for an undisclosed amount of cash and stock, and immediately becomes a wholly-owned subsidiary of privately-held Emerald.

Founded in 1983, DDS pioneered the continuous backup products. The company’s current software technology has evolved beyond continuous backup to allow computer networks to simultaneously generate backup copies each time a transaction is completed or a file is saved. The DDS software runs while remaining transparent to all network users and without disrupting network operations.

Emerald will initially continue to market and sell the DDS Fulltime continuous backup software and DDS Scheduler periodic backup software through traditional DDS VAR channels and distributors. These distributors include Network Connections (Atlanta, GA); Agora (Munich, West Germany); Vitek (Copenhagen, Denmark); Internet (Stockholm, Sweden) and GBC (Berlin, NJ). The software will also soon be available through all other Emerald national distributors.

At the same time, Emerald will offer the DDS software through its own VAR and distributor channels for integration with the RapidRecover line of quarter-inch tape cartridge, DAT and 8mm tape backup systems.

All current DDS employees have been offered a position with Emerald. These employees, who will continue to operate out of the Longmont facility include engineering, marketing, sales and and administrative personnel.
