University of Bristol Deploys Second Spectra Logic Tape Library
To preserve and manage data for 20,000 students
This is a Press Release edited by StorageNewsletter.com on October 30, 2019 at 2:22 pmSpectra Logic Corporation announced that the University of Bristol has deployed its Spectra enterprise tape libraries for its IT infrastructure.

Considered one of the world’s top 50 universities in the QS world university rankings, the university has a 7-year relationship with Spectra Logic for the long-term protection of its growing volume of valuable student, research and corporate data. To support its considerable storage and archiving requirements, the institution replaced its legacy system with a Spectra T950 Tape Library to accompany its existing Spectra T680 Tape Library with integrated BlueScale encryption.
“We currently backup about 200TB per week but we expect this to grow, so we were keen to reduce purchasing and running costs wherever possible,” explained Harvey Ditchfield, senior system administrator, University of Bristol. “The T950 can easily scale with our needs. We are very happy with the outstanding ongoing service we receive from Spectra’s support team.“
Located in Bristol, UK, the University of Bristol has over 6,000 employees, approximately 23,000 students, and more than 100 buildings hosting its faculties and student facilities. With more than 800 virtual and physical servers, the University backups approximately 200TB of data per week, making up a total of over 3PB of managed assets. The institution needed a backup solution to replace its aging system, free up costly primary storage, and protect data in a limited floor space.
The T950 library provided density in a smaller footprint than the legacy solution, offering the university a higher storage capacity within its limited physical space and greater value for its investment. The Spectra tape libraries have already given the university excellent ROI at low TCO, with flexible upgrade options and no egress cost to recall data.
Further solidifying the long-term relationship between Spectra and the university, Spectra helped to restore the University of Bristol’s operations in a single day after an extensive flood with its storage crisis lifeline service’, a programme designed to help organisations with documentable disaster situations in which their equipment is damaged beyond the ability to restore.
