History (1989): Installed SSD Market in 1988 close to 260GB

53% for StorageTek, 20% for Memorex

IDC estimates the installed SSD market for 1988 (worldwide and in IBM environment) close to 260,000MB and forecasls for 1991 a little less than three times more (700,000MB).

Last year’s WW market (installed base) was shared 53.4% by StorageTek, 19.8% by Memorex, 12.2% by NAS, 10.2% by Amdahl and finally 4.4% by EMC2.

If IBM has never unveiled anything in this field, June and July were full of announcements from Bull (Hitachi), Amdahl and StorageTek (Orion from EMC2).
