The abstract of the patent published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office states: ”One embodiment facilitates iterative data recovery and error correction in a distributed system. During operation, the system receives, by a controller of a first storage device, data to be encoded and stored. The system encodes, by the controller, the data based on an erasure code, (EC) to obtain an EC-encoded codeword. The system splits, by the controller, the EC-encoded codeword into sub-blocks. The system encodes, by the controller, a sub-block based on an error correction code, (ECC) to obtain an ECC-encoded local sub-block. The system stores the ECC-encoded local sub-block in the first storage device. The system transmits, to a second storage device, a remaining sub-block, wherein the transmitted sub-block is to be ECC-encoded and stored by the second storage device, thereby allowing the data to be subsequently decoded by the first storage device.”
