Sales of Storage Software Up Only 1.5% From 3Q12 to 3Q13 – IDC
Leaders EMC, IBM an Symantec losing market shares
This is a Press Release edited by StorageNewsletter.com on December 12, 2013 at 2:59 pmResults from the International Data Corporation‘s Worldwide Storage Software QView show the worldwide storage software market increased 1.5% during 3Q13 compared to the same quarter of 2012.
Revenue during the quarter totaled $3.47 billion.
“Data protection & recovery software and storage & device management software were the two major sources of growth this quarter,” said Jingwen Li, research analyst with IDC’s storage team. “Also of note is the fact that investments in storage replication software have fallen throughout the year as suppliers have increasingly bundled this capability within larger competitive deals.”
EMC, IBM, and Symantec were the top ranking storage software vendors with 25.2%, 15.1%, and 14.0% share of the total market respectively.
Among the storage software market segments, Data Protection & Recovery sales were up 5.3% year over year to $1.32 billion in revenues. Storage & Device Management software was up 3.7% year over year to $672 million. Storage Replication software sales declined -3.6% year over year to $660 million. Finally, Archiving sales were up 1.2% year over year, with $336 million in revenue for the quarter.

There is really a problem in the wordlwide storage industry this year. External disk system market revenue diminished for each quarter of 2013, according to IDC, and software sales are relatively flat. Market shares of top 3 storage software companies
