Plextor to Reveal M6 2.5-Inch SSD Prototype at IFA

And M.2 form factor drives

Plextor gave a sneak preview of the upcoming M6 Drive and M.2 form factor SSD solutions at the IFA show in Berlin.

The M6 is the anticipated successor to the Plextor M5 Series.

It is a 2,5", 5mm SSD for the consumer market and is scheduled to come in the following versions:

  • a version for the high performance segment, the Pro version; and
  • a version to cater the needs of average computer users, the S version.

The M6 features the next generation of proprietary TrueSpeed technology that works in tandem with the Marvell 88SS9187 controller for enhanced performance and reliability. The new drive will also feature the latest generation of NAND flash from Toshiba: A19 Toggle NAND, which is the smallest and fastest performing MLC available. On top, the M6 is flatter than its predecessor featuring a 5mm casing. The full performance specifications for the M6 series and release schedule are not finalized yet and will be announced at a later stage.

Following the new Ultrabook specifications by Intel, Plextor also displayed new M.2 (also known as New Generation Form Factor or NGFF) SSD solutions. Using a PCIe interface, the M.2 will overcome the performance bottlenecks of SATA. The new M.2 series has not got a finalized name yet, but the samples shown had lengths of 60mm and 80mm. The M.2 series, like all other SSD solutions by Plextor, shall be paired to a controller from Marvell and NAND flash from Toshiba. The controller used will be Marvell 88SS9183 and NAND flash will be Toshiba 19nm Toggle.
