The abstract of the patent published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office states: "Methods of directly accessing a mass storage data device without communicating through an operating system layer are useful in recovering information previously stored in the mass storage device."
The patent application was filed on Jan. 16, 2007 (11/654,290).
