Lucidity Launches Lumen

Bringing data-driven decision making and greater control to cloud storage management

Lucidity, a multi-cloud storage management company, announced the availability of Lumen, the visibility, recommendations, and actions engine for managing cloud storage.

Lucidity Lumen Intro

Following a successful early access program, Lumen delivers seamless disk tiering management to Lucidity customers, helping them optimize their application performance and reduce cloud storage costs with data-driven decisions for disk tiering faster than ever before.

The volume of data is skyrocketing, and it’s moving to the cloud faster than ever. As a result, the cloud storage market is projected to grow from $134.5 billion in 2024 to $1.1 trillion by 2035. However, cloud storage remains an oft-overlooked area in terms of both cost overruns and inefficiencies. Managing storage efficiently involves navigating more than 1,000 possible manual decisions-from provisioning and utilization to cost control and avoiding downtime. In 2021, Lucidity set out to change that with the launch of AutoScaler, enabling the world’s largest enterprises like World Market and Dometic to autonomously rightsize their cloud storage across AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud. Now, Lucidity is taking the next step towards simplifying cloud storage management with Lumen.

“Cloud storage deserves the same level of automation and cost optimization that cloud compute has gotten,” says Nitin Bhaudaria, co-founder, Lucidity. “Getting the most out of your cloud storage is complex-leading to a reality of overprovisioned capacity, premium-by-default disk tiers, and idle and orphaned disks, just to name a few. We’ve solved the problem of overprovisioning with AutoScaler, and we’re excited to simplify never-before-touched areas of cloud storage management with Lumen, starting with disk tiering optimization. The ability to get actionable recommendations for matching the right disk tier to your application needs, and convert disk tiering up or down with one click and no downtime is a real game changer.”

Bringing efficiency to cloud storage management
Data is exploding and moving to the cloud faster than ever before. As cloud usage increases, cloud storage is making a larger impact on IT, Cloud, and DevOps teams’ time and the business’ bottom line. Cloud storage management involves a thousand combinations of manual decisions that lead to waste and inefficiency. Disk tiering alone requires choosing between six tier options based on projected IO/s, throughput, and latency, all of which can be nearly impossible to accurately predict ahead of time. To hedge vs. potential performance issues, most organizations end up choosing the most premium tier, and without clear visibility into real-world usage, never convert to a more optimal tier. Over the size of an enterprise environment, that adds up to real wasted spend and large-scale inefficiencies.

Managing cloud storage effectively is impossible today due to a lack of visibility into what can and should be optimized, dynamic environments that require frequent changes with limited predictability, skills and resource gaps, and cloud service providers that restrict actions or require downtime to make changes. Lumen addresses these challenges by providing unified visibility into key storage metrics, clear recommendations on disk tiering optimization based on your historical data and application requirements, and the ability to make single-click, downtime-free disk tier changes.

“Working with Lucidity has helped us move faster and smarter,” says Aaron Stayton, manager, cloud and infrastructure engineering, Dometic. “Their team gets the challenges we’re trying to solve, and they bring ideas to the table that make a real difference. It’s been a strong, collaborative partnership that’s delivering results and we’re excited about exploring the impact Lumen can make at Dometic.”

Key capabilities and benefits of Lumen
Lumen helps enterprises around the world continue their efforts in reducing wasted cloud storage spend, optimizing application performance, and reclaiming hundreds of IT and DevOps hours. Lumen builds on Lucidity’s success in multi-cloud storage management by delivering the following capabilities:

  • Understand the state of cloud storage across your environment
  • Get insights into key cross-environment storage metrics like current disk tiering, usage patterns, and potential cost savings and performance improvements in one unified dashboard
  • Uncover new ways to reduce your cloud spend
  • With data-driven disk tiering recommendations backed by a multidimensional cost and performance analysis, users can compare IO/s, throughput, latency, and cost between their current tier and the Lucidity recommended tier
  • Unlock painless disk tier conversions
  • Avoid downtime and complex tiering change processes with single-click disk tier conversions. Lucidity performs seamless disk tier conversions for the disks you choose with no impact on uptime
  • Uplevel your performance
  • Get clear recommendations and insights into disks that are bottlenecked at their current tier, so you can optimize performance with a single click

Availability
Lumen is available for Azure, with AWS and GCP following in a future release.

Founded in 2021, Lucidity is a small US company focusing on cloud storage. Very active with AutoScaler, the value proposition is to optimize block storage usage within AWS, GCP and Azure. AutoScaler relies on BtrFS on Linux and its capability to unify sub-volumes that can be disconnected and then eliminated. For Windows, the product leverages NTFS. With an agent deployed for each VM, it doesn't sit in the data path meaning that in case of agent failure, nothing is impacted and production can continue. With this philosophy in place, an effective cost optimization can be setup.

Lucidity just announced during The IT Press Tour this week in California its new offering, promoted as Lumen. This product can be installed with AutoScaler but also independently soon. With AutoScaler removing unused storage space, Lumen evacuates blocks to a new level and participates to the reduction of cost, in 2 phases. The tiering recommendations are based on historical usage data, the product doesn't have access to users' data. The dashboard invites the user to explore different scenarios and their impact on costs and performance. Being not intrusive like AutoScaler, the approach is to deliver the service via one single click to put in place up-tiering and down-tiering operations. Both products are available on AWS, Azure and GCP Marketplaces.
