History 2004: WW Storage Software Posts 3rd Consecutive Quarter of Growth

SRM becomes largest market.

According to IDC’s Worldwide Quarterly Storage Software Tracker, the WW storage software market grew 16.9% year over year to $1.85 billion in total revenue in 2Q04, driven by strong demand in SRM software.

Effective SRM is the foundation for delivering an efficient, reliable, and highly available storage infrastructure, regardless of company size,” said Bill North, storage software research director for IDC. “Device and SAN management software use grew by 36% compared with the 2Q03. This dramatic growth, driven primarily by customer need to support larger and more complex storage networks, combined with a gradual decline in the more mature backup and archive software market, made storage resource management (SRM) the largest of the storage software markets for the first time.”

SRM now represents the largest functional market of storage software, growing more than 30% Y/Y. Backup and archive continues to be a healthy market with 9.2% Y/Y growth. The storage replication software and file system software functional markets also enjoyed strong results in the first quarter with 13.5% and 18.5% Y/Y growth respectively.

EMC and Veritas posted the strongest results among the top 5 vendors, with 30.5% and 23.4% Y/Y growth, respectively. EMC led the overall market this quarter with 32.5% revenue share, gaining 3.4 points over 2Q03. Veritas maintained its 2nd position with 22.6% revenue share, gaining more than 1 point of market share Y/Y. IBM and HP both gained ground on CA, resulting in a 3-way statistical tie for the 3rd position.
