Abstract: “It is believed that the configuration of perpendicular recording system can push the areal density of magnetic recording system up to 1 Tb/in2. After that, before the use of energy assisted magnetic recording, the bit patterned media (BPM) might be used for the magnetic recording system at a few Tb/in2. The writing process of bit patterned media will still adopt the conventional perpendicular recording configuration by the single pole head combined with the soft underlayer (SUL). In this work, the bit patterned media recording performance is investigated by considering the magnetic interaction of the magnetic islands with the available conventional writing field and thermal stability. Conventional BPM can achieve the areal density around 2 Tb/in2, while staggered BPM can double the areal density to around 4 Tb/in2 without assisted writing. This study is useful for designing the structure of bit patterned media in hard disk drives.“
