History 2004: WW Storage Storage Software Grows 23% in 1Q04

Reaching $1.85 billion

According to IDC’s Worldwide Quarterly Storage Software Tracker, the WW storage software market grew 23.3% Y/Y in 1Q04, reaching $1.85 billion in total revenue and representing 2 quarters of consecutive Y/Y growth.

Sequential growth over 4Q03 was flat.

Continuing the momentum from 2003, all of the major storage software segments posted double-digit revenue growth in 1Q04 when compared to 1Q03.

The SRM market posted the largest gain at 32.3% Y/Y growth while the backup and archive software market continued to represent the biggest market segment, growing 22.0% Y/Y. The storage replication software and file system software markets also enjoyed strong results in 1Q04 with 18.1% and 12.4% Y/Y growth, respectively.

Storage software overcame seasonal spending patterns during the first quarter, strengthening our expectation of continued growth during the remainder of 2004,” said Bill North, research director for IDC’s storage software.

Although each of the top 5 vendors posted double-digit Y/Y growth, EMC, CA and Veritas performed better than the overall market in 1Q04. EMC (the combined results of EMC and Legato) led the overall market this quarter with 30.1% revenue share, gaining 2.7 points when compared with 1Q03. Veritas maintained its second position with 22.8% revenue share followed by CA with 9.5% share.
