This is a Press Release edited by StorageNewsletter.com on September 28, 2023 at 2:01 pmThe new book, Game Changer: How Strategic Pricing Shapes Businesses, Markets, and Society (Wiley: October 2023) is authored by Jean-Manuel Izaret of the Boston Consulting Group and Arnab Sinha, senior partner based in Philadelphia, PA.
Izaret devotes Chapter 10 (pages 147-162) to the HDD industry and the nuances and strategic moves needed to win at the Power Game which characterizes this industry and others.
He describes how the major companies in the HDD industry are caught up in the “Power Game” of strategic pricing.
The defining concept of the Power Game is market concentration. In this case, the industry is dominated by just 4 companies: Seagate, Western Digital, Maxor and Hitachi. As a result, every negotiation on customer pricing is a high stakes negotiation.
He writes: “The stakes are high, because the win or loss of any individual customer relationship can have a material effect on a supplier and can potentially reshape the entire market.”

Strange that the 2 PhDs, authors of the book, wrote that Hitachi and Maxtor are HDD manufacturers. They are not since a long time, as the first one was acquired by WD in 2011 and the second one by Seagate in 2006.
