4U-72RHD, 35" deep, 72 3.5-inch drives bays, stacked 2-deep in 36 removable bays
This is a Press Release edited by StorageNewsletter.com on April 21, 2023 at 2:02 pmeRacks Open Source Systems announced availability of NAS72 high-capacity data storage servers with up to 1,584TB of raw storage space.
The California-based firm is a manufacturer and provider of Open-Source-based rackmount servers – specifically high-capacity and Petascale storage servers for NAS as well as cloud-based applications, virtualization, containers, Kubernetes, Docker, Podman, and so forth.
The NAS72 is a 4U rackmount unit that comes with 72 removable drive bays. The company offers these with combinations of up to 22TB capacity HDDs, allowing for a total raw storage space of up to 1,584TB
In addition, 26TB SMR drives are available, bringing total raw storage to 1.872PB by custom quote.
Customers of the firm can order NAS72 to be configured with up to 72 removable 22TB Western Digital Gold enterprise drives (other brands and models available), for a total capacity of 1,584TB.
Lower capacity HDDs are available for reduced space requirements and future scalability. The chassis, 4U-72RHD, is 35″ deep and holds 72 3.5″ drives bays, stacked 2-deep in 36 removable bays.

Various configurations of Dual-Xeon, Dual-Epyc, or single-CPU solutions are available – the firm can even configure a single-CPU Ryzen config – with ECC, which is powerful. This has been one of highest-demand configs, lately.
NAS72 starter configuration is partially populated with lower capacity HDDs, which offers more affordable pricing options to the company’s customers, and a more accessible entry level.
“The 12-to-18-TB drives are the ‘Sweet spot’ of $/TB as of mid-2023, yielding over a full petabye of raw storage – The 22TB HDDs may be considerably more expensive than lower capacity drives. They may not be the ‘sweet spot’ of cost per terabyte, but for those users who need every available terabyte, these drives are certainly an option. Dream big! And we will provide you with storage for your dreams,” said Joseph Wolff, founder and CTO.
For those who cannot compromise on storage, the NAS72, configured with 22TB HDDs, feature Western Digital’s latest 22TB enterprise, NAS, or surveillance drives, enables customers to more efficiently provision and scale their data center environments with unmatched TCO.
With zettabyte-scale data growth, the need for higher-capacity data storage across a spectrum of applications and workloads can be reliably met only with high capacity enterprise HDDs.
The company has always been committed to providing high-capacity, cloud-ready storage servers based on Open Source OSs. The firm’s customers receive their purchased units pre-loaded and pre-installed with their choices of open source OS and software, ready to go.
The company’ signature service is tailored to save customers time and money by delivering turnkey products wherever possible. Choices of cloud/storage software such as Ceph (and other SDS), OpenStack (and modules), CloudStack, Eucalyptus Cloud (AWS-compatible), OpenNebula, ProxMox are available, as well as NAS software and OSs including EasyNAS, Rockstor, XigmaNAS (formerly NAS4Free), OpenMediaVault, TrueNAS CORE (formerly FreeNAS), TrueNAS SCALE, Ubuntu (or other std distro) configured for NAS, and more.
As other products offered by the company, NAS72 will come with a standard 1-year warranty and 3 years of limited warranty. Extended warranties are available.
The firm’s years of experience in open source software configuration is an added value to its quality professional computing hardware products. Consulting is available for system architecture, provisioning, development, CI/CD, Open Source planning and migration, and more.
“Leap into Petascale-class storage today! Because your big ambitions need bigger storage. Contact us today to Hold on to Your Dreams and the storage for them,” said Wolff.
