HYCU Introduces First Data Protection Development Platform for SaaS

Now more than 17,000 SaaS vendors and ISVs can deliver data protection services in days, enabling 59+ billion users to backup and recover in minutes.

HYCU, Inc. unveiled R-Cloud, to allow SaaS companies and ISVs to provide, in days, backup and recovery services for their SaaS offerings.

R-Cloud is the first low-code, purpose-built data protection development platform designed to make it easy for SaaS vendors to deliver a true enterprise class backup and recovery service for their users that is secure and scalable. With more than 17,000 SaaS applications in use across organizations today[1], 99% of those applications have no reliable backup and recovery available. With the explosion of SaaS and the rapid modernization of applications, it is more difficult than ever to see, manage, and protect business-critical applications for IT departments. 

“If the number of vendors in one of the industry’s leading market reports have only protected seven SaaS applications to date, the current approach to backup and recover SaaS has no future,” said Simon Taylor, founder and CEO. “The entire approach is broken. R-Cloud is the result of 4 years of development, and a number of patent pendings, in an effort to closely engage with existing customers and SaaS solutions providers and to ensure there is an easy way to visualize all data across the enterprise, identify what data is protected, ensure data is not left unprotected, and be able to recover data in the event of human error or malicious attack. At its foundation, the R-Cloud platform empowers SaaS companies to leverage company’s data protection expertise, orchestration, identity and access management, policy management, and analytics to ensure all SaaS data is protected.

For the first time, SaaS companies using R-Cloud can quickly release secure and verifiable data protection delivered as a service for their customers. Today, the average development time to create new data protection is at least four quarters, and HYCU has reduced the time to 4 days.

The first SaaS-based applications, databases, and services supported in R-Cloud will include Amazon RDS, Google Cloud SQL, Google Workspace, Google BigQuery, Salesforce, Atlassian Confluence, Jira Software and Atlassian Jira Service management, and Microsoft 365. New application integrations will be available through Protégé Marketplace.

Your company solved a serious problem that didn't prevent users to adopt SaaS application accepting to expose their data. Beyond the marketplace, how will you promote your solution and sell R-Cloud?
I think that's a great question. In terms of going to market with R-Cloud. We see this as a joint collaboration with SaaS vendors across the globe, as well as cloud service providers and other members of the channel and resell community. If you're a SaaS vendor today, you're looking for the ability to provide your end customers with integrated backup and recovery, but you don't necessarily have the expertise to be able to execute on it. That's not the SaaS vendor's fault. But certainly, HYCU's ability to provide that capability, inside of three days, creates a natural motion, in which those SaaS vendors can then pass along the value of our cloud directly to their customers. 
 
What is the pricing model for R-Cloud?
R-Cloud is priced between $1 to $3 per month per integration. And, that is on a per user basis. The aim of this is to make pricing as simple and frictionless as possible, and allow end customers to be able to add integrations ad hoc in order to support their environments.
 
How do you anticipate the market reaction following your announcement?
I think we're already seeing a lot of positive reaction to R-Cloud. I think as we've heard, many people say, this truly is turning the industry on its head. And, I just say that it's about time. I think people are scared right now. They're scared of data loss. They're scared of ransomware attacks. They're scared of mission critical infrastructure failure. I think for the first time, there's a true solution out there that can help to really address these problems in a way that has never been done before.
 
What is the barrier to entry for the competition?
Well, first and foremost, SaaS-washed solutions just won't do. So I would say that any legacy solution that was built, prior to five years ago, would have a really tough time building a developer-led platform that allows any SaaS vendor to write to it, and then offer customers the extensibility to view and visualize all of that data under a single pane of glass. I think the second piece is the will. You know, frankly, there's a lot of data protection vendors out there today that are simply selling storage. I believe the fact that HYCU has never sold storage is a strong positive. We are in the business of providing frictionless, seamless, and simple data protection for everybody at-scale and that is something that most vendors simply aren't focused on or able to do. From a direct technology perspective and development perspective, this was over two years of development with more than 125 software engineers with an average tenure of 10 years in the data protection space. As you know, data protection built by some of the world's best engineers using new technology entirely SaaS-based and built for purpose to fix a very specific data protection challenge in the SaaS industry cannot be copied or done as quickly or easily. We are ushering in a new era in data protection and I could not be more proud of our talented engineers and product leadership for what we have been able to do to introduce R-Cloud.
 

Our comments

This announcement shakes the landscape with a different approach. Usually we see vendors trying to cover a significant needs and many of these players protect Salesforce, Office 365 or Google Workspace. At the same time, others try to protect an application used by many users but not cover yet. Same story between red and blue ocean, but these models always start with the application to protect.

As the industry once again creates its own complexity with the proliferation of SaaS applications, the data exposure to risk is even more critical. It confirms the large adoption of Cloud and therefore SaaS without any doubt, it is just a new fact. Statistics speak for themselves with the number of SaaS applications present in US and used by each company.
But the surprise and the associated danger is that users adopt SaaS applications even without data protection in place. Some of them think they're protected but it is clearly not the case. We're surprise that SaaS applications don't couple such protection service, it's a scandal, this is not the case for IaaS and under discussion for PaaS.

This new wave follows bare metal, VMs, container and cloud solutions iterations with different top vendors for each wave.

HYCU, as a member of the small Next Generation Data Protection club, took a different path to solve this challenge. First, SaaS applications proliferate. Second, the best data protection mechanism for each application is known by its developer itself. The result is a new approach with a data protection development platform and each word is important here.

The model has 2 directions: first, deliver a development foundation to vendors to protect their SaaS applications; and second, offer to users a data protection solution built and certified by the application vendor itself and consolidate this service layer on the Protégé data management solution. Platform implicitly means that all data protection traffic here is managed by one and only one service as mentioned above.

To boost adoption by vendors, the company offers free of charge this development platform with a low code/no code model and target a 3 days max. to realize a specific service. The service is then exposed and offered to users via the Protégé marketplace and of course paid by them. It shows a clear win/win/win model with a data protection solution for a SaaS application vendor, a protection for the user in a consolidated way and at then end HYCU. We heard that the solution will be sold between 1 to $3 per seat per month.

R-Cloud arrives with R-Graph to visually list of deployed applications protected or not. R-Graph is free of charge to help users discover all services used by enterprises.

We realize that R-Cloud is a real U3 model as we defined in the past. U3 means Universal, Unified and Ubiquitous. Universal as it protects potentially all SaaS applications when module will be available, Unified with the notion of platform and consolidation of services on Protégé and finally Ubiquitous as it is available everywhere from any place.

We'll see how competition will react but this announcement disrupts the landscape.
