History 2001: Overland Transfers SLR Autoloader Activity to Tandberg

Imitating Quantum

For some time now, Tandberg Data has been trying to imitate Quantum, in other words, to increase its expertise in the realm of library design and manufacturers in order to free itself of its current external suppliers, Qualstar for libraries and Overland Data for autoloaders.

Recall that Tandberg had attempted to acquire Breece Hill, but the transaction fell apart.

Its latest move in this direction: the acquisition from Overland, for just under NOK10 million ($1.1 million), of complete rights to the SLR autoloader (1/8), including design, manufacturing and future development rights.

As a result, production of these robotics will be transferred from San Diego, CA to Oslo, Norway.

Overland manufactured these autoloaders- a niche market – exclusively for Tandberg, which is the only firm invested in the SLR tape format.
