History (1999): Maxtor in NAS HDDs

The recent infatuation of HDD makers for the NAS market is growing. Recall that Quantum acquired Meridian Data in June 999, another NAS company.

The underlying strategy is to be able to sell HDDs that are directly connectable to LANs.

But for this to happen, you need the software expertise of a Creative or Meridian, who developed NAS specific OSs to drive these network appliances.

IDC expects entry- and workgroup-level NAS appliance markets to grow from $963 million in 1998 to $3.9 billion in 2002.
