IBM Spectrum Storage delivers technology for SDS that can dynamically and flexibly store data at optimal cost, helping maximize performance and ensure data protection. Spectrum Archive, a member of the Spectrum Storage family, incorporates the Linear Tape File System (LTFS) format to deliver a GUI for simplified access and management of files on tape as easily as if they were on hard disk, without the need for proprietary tape applications.
Spectrum Archive Library Edition (LE) enables read, write, search, and indexing of user metadata, as well as access to data for midrange and enterprise tape libraries. Metadata is the descriptive information about user data stored on a cartridge and it enables searching and accessing of files through the GUI of the OS. With graphic search, read, and write, it can be easier to write and read files using Spectrum Archive LE as compared to using traditional tape management software. The expanded functionality of Spectrum Archive LE provides LTFS Storage management capabilities for IBM-branded automation, drives, and media.
Spectrum Archive LE software runs on the server to enable mounting of the library as a file system and the indexing of data, while the file manager manages the automation and provides OS level access to all the content in the library. Spectrum Archive LE is based on SNIA LTFS Format Specification standard and its self-describing format, LTFS-formatted tape cartridges are 100% interchangeable within the Spectrum Archive product family and other LTFS-based systems.
Spectrum Archive LE is compatible with the IBM tape hardware product portfolio and supports the following tape library and tape drives:

- IBM LTO-9, -8, -7, -6, and -5 tape drives
