Exploring Liquid-Based Memories for Ultrahigh Density Storage
From 2030 onwards, new types of storage technologies are expected to enter the memory roadmap, complementing 3D NAND flash, HDDs, and tapes in the latency/productivity space. This article introduces two new liquid-based storage concepts: colloidal and electrolithic memory. We explain the basic operating principles, show the first experimental results, and highlight their potential for future nearline storage applications. These liquid memories were recently presented in an invited paper at the 2022 International Memory Workshop.

Indicative overview of today’s main memory technologies and their application domains, illustrating the trade-off between latency and productivity
