History (1998): Hitachi to Reach 15,000RPM on 3.5-Inch HDD

Integrating 2.5-inch platters

Hitachi will begin production in November of its Pegasus 2 (DK3EI), a 9.1GB 3.5-inch form factor HDD using 2.5-inch platters turning at a record 12,030rpm, for a list price of $1,050.

The Japanese company plans next year to hit 15,000rpm.

For its SCSI 7,200rpm line, with a current maximum of 18GB, 36GB will be announced at Comdex on 10×3.5-inch disks, and Ultra2 LVD will arrive in January 1999.

This line of HDDs will subsequently hit 10,000rpm with 3.0-inch media.

According to Hitachi, the increase in speed results in an increase in power consumption, and thus in dissipated heat, always a problem for the unit’s reliability.

At the same time, however Hitachi will begin production in November of its Pegasus 2 (DK3EI), a 9.1GB 3.5-inch form factor HDD using 2.5-inch platters turning at a record 12,030rpm, for a list price of $1,050.
