History (1998): First HDD for Sub-$1,000 PCs From Seagate

Seagate Technology took its competition by surprise with the announcement of the first HDD specifically designed for sub-$1,000 OEM desktop computer systems.

Specs are: 2.1GB capacity, 3.5-inch form factor, Ultra ATA interface, 11ms average seek, MR heads, EPRML, low acoustics, 150G non-operational shock, advanced power management for energy conservation.

Sample quantities have already gone to OEMs and production will begin during 3Q98.
