Quantum 2022 Predictions in Data Management

Cold storage heats up, tape cool again, greater investments in longer term retention of video, securing endpoints in ransomware protection, ADAS research beyond consumer applications, keep pushing content to edge

Quantum Predictions for 2022 in Data Management

As the company close out a productive 2021, it’s looking ahead to 2022. Its team of industry experts put together 6 predictions about key trends and how data will be processed, analyzed, and enriched to drive business insights in the coming year.

1. Cold storage heats up.
As IT budgets lag data growth rates, pressure builds for creative ways to cost-effectively store, manage, and extract value from more of this data. Emerging cold storage architectures and services will blur the lines between cold and warm data with high performance access and simpler cost models allowing for more effective storage and use of cold data sets. More frequently, cold storage solutions will be deployed within an organization’s own data center, colocation facility, or hosted IT environment, where data can be maintained within in-house security perimeters to meet data sovereignty and data residency requirements.

2. Tape becomes cool again.
As opposed to viewing tape as an offline resource in offsite storage facilities, large enterprises, cloud-scale solution providers, research facilities, and government agencies will increasingly turn to online, tape-based solutions for petabyte- and exabyte-scale data stores and active, accessible archives. Tape will prevail for the next decade due to its technology maturity, continued low-cost leadership, low power consumption, data protection, and long-term durability. High-performance recovery of tape-based data will enable organizations to cost-effectively expand the application of AI, deep learning and other complex analyses with simplified staging and recovery of data sets.

3. Greater investments in longer term retention of video.
Many organizations, especially in highly regulated industries, need to retain video data for a year or more for regulatory compliance or internal policies, but have challenges with enterprise storage systems and public cloud that tend to be expensive and complex. There are technology options available, such as object storage, tape storage, and tiering software, that can provide cost-effective ways to retain video for long periods of time. Legal requirements, pressure from the CSO and CIO, and more IT department involvement in the server and storage infrastructure for video surveillance will be the catalysts to these technologies being deployed to solve long-term retention requirements.

4. Securing endpoints in ransomware protection becomes paramount.
Securing endpoints is one of the most important elements in ransomware protection, but some of that focus will shift to backup infrastructures. This will be a key differentiator between those that pay ransom (primarily using cyber insurance as a form of recovery) and lose customer trust and revenue, to those that leverage best practices to protect and recover data and retain their customers’ trust. Offline storage for long-term archiving with tape will continue to increase its presence as a cost-effective pairing to cloud (offsite copy) when leveraged on prem (offline) for ransomware recovery.

5. ADAS research goes beyond consumer applications.
Autonomous vehicle developers will focus increasingly beyond typical consumer applications in areas like mining, construction, maritime, military, and agriculture. These environments include complexities well beyond roadway applications as they lack cues, such as lane markers, traffic signs, established roads, or environmental consistencies. The need for ruggedization will increase, as these off-road environments are typified by extreme temperatures, extensive shock and vibration, and dirt and debris.

6. We’ll keep pushing content to the edge.
A new development that will play out in the new year is the impact of having truly useful shared storage with built-in solutions in surprising places – especially for remote location and on-set content production. The old joke about ‘fix it in post’ is dead when you can fix it on-set and content can be ingested right into shared storage on-set where automated proxy and daily production and sharing can happen instantly instead of waiting to get back to the facility.
