Raidix Granted Patent by USPTO on Performing Read-Ahead in Storage Systems

Read-ahead is caching technology that analyzes workload and predicts which fragment of data will be requested in future.

Raidix International AG, St. Petersburg, Russia, has been assigned a patent (11,169,923) developed by Anastasiev, Evgeny Evgenievich, and Lazareva, Svetlana Viktorovna, St. Petersburg, Russia, for method for performing read-ahead in data storage systems.

The software developer has obtained a property right for its method for performing read-ahead in data storage.

Read-ahead is a caching technology that analyzes workload and predicts which fragment of data will be requested in the future. Then, for overall system acceleration, the data is cached on a faster RAM or SSD. Even though the technology has been implemented in a variety of data storage solutions, improving read-ahead remains an important objective.

As a result of intensive research and development efforts undertaken in the company’s laboratory, Raidix’ engineers have developed a new approach to operating data intervals. The method is implemented in firm’s products for software-defined storage solutions and brings better data accessibility to businesses depending on huge volumes of critical data (media production, video surveillance, data centers).

The abstract of the patent published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office states: “The method for performing read-ahead operations in the data storage systems is disclosed and includes determining a sequential address space interval of a request and a time of the request, placing the data into a read-ahead interval list if the address space interval exceeds a threshold, and placing the data about request intervals having a length shorter than the threshold into a random request interval list, identifying a partial overlap between the address space interval of the current request and the interval stored in one of the lists, verifying whether the length of the address space interval exceeds a threshold and if so–placing the data about this sequential interval into the read-ahead interval list, performing read-ahead of data.

The patent application was filed on July 16, 2018 (16/766,932).
