Cervoz SSD RO-MLC Solution Works for Submarine Systems

Cervoz Technology Co., Ltd. has had customers with different industrial-grade storage needs over the years, but it was in 2018 that the company partnered with a manufacturer of monitoring and control systems for submarines.

The manufacturer previously used SLC technology storage modules for its systems but was curious to see if there was a cheaper yet equally reliable alternative. This is where the RO-MLC solution comes in.

The RO-MLC products use MLC NAND but with a special firmware that manipulates cell storage at the block level such that it simulates SLC technology (storing one bit of data per cell) and each block’s capacity is only half of that which MLC stores (2 bits per cell). The resulting module has enhanced endurance and reliability.

The company’s solution provided was the R335 family storage module, which has data retention ability that is 4x higher than the conventional MLC module’s and reliability that is 10x higher. The solution proved to the customer that it was more than enough to serve as an alternative to the SLC module they were using at the time. Furthermore, the RO-MLC cost a fraction (4 to 6x less) than the SLC.
