History (1996): 1TB on Single Optical Disk Platter Previews Eastman Kodak

With help of $6.3 million grant from the US Commerce Department

Eastman Kodak (Rochester, NY) has received a 4-year, $6.3 million grant from the US Commerce Department to develop an optical disk system with 1TB of storage per platter.

Kodak’s current 14-inch WORM stores 14.8GB, while the highest capacity on record for a single platter is 16GB on 12-inch diameter media by ATG Gigadisc.

Kodak’s proposal was part of a collaboration with 3 other partners: the National Storage Industry Consortium (San Diego, CA), SDL (San Jose, CA) and Carnegie Mellon University (Pittburgh, PA).

The team was collectively awarded $10 million and will invest $11 million of their own funds in the project.
