History (1994): EMC to Acquire Array Technology From Tandem
For less than $10 million
By Jean Jacques Maleval | December 2, 2020 at 1:56 pmEMC Corp. (Hopkington, MA) has signed a letter of intent with Tandem Computer Inc. to acquire the assets of Array Technology Corporation (Boulder, CO).
Array Technology was founded in 1989 by Seagate Technology and has been a wholly-owned subsidiary of Tandem Computers since April 1990.
The acquisition of Array’s assets is a cash transaction involving less than ten million dollars and is subject to the signing of a definitive agreement.
Array Technology develops and manufactures RAID storage solutions.
Included in this acquisition are more than 20 disk array technology patents issued to or filed by Array Technology.
This company originated Alpine, a RAID-5 for AS/400 in StorageTek’s catalog. This RAID wasn’t very successful because it had technical problems and was also very sophisticated and expensive.
EMC seems to be very greedy. In the past few months it acquired Magna Computer, Epoch System, Copernique and now Array Technology.

Note: One of the 83 purchases of EMC from 1993 to 2015 before the acquisition of the storage leader in 2015 by Dell for $63 billion.
