History (1992): Larsen & Toubro Sheduled Production of Low-End 3.5- and 5.25-Inch HDDs in India

In technical cooperation with Western Digital

Larsen & Toubro Limited (Madras, India) have scheduled production in India of low-end 3.5- and 5.25-inch HDDs based on a technical cooperation with the US Western Digital.

First, they will manufacture 20, then 40MB drives, units WD has stopped making.

L&T have the capacity to manufacture 60,000 drives per year and plans to expand the facility to 150,000.

This company produces floppy disk drives in collaboration with Y-E Data of Japan since 1985. It has manufactured about 100,000 of them.

In India, L & T is the sole manufacturer of HDDs with Sujata Data Products, in Bombay, that makes some of Seagate’s HDDs.
