History (1992): Reliability Problems for IBM 3390 Model 2

RW head causes unrecoverable data checks.

There are serious problems with IBM 3390 Model 2 DASD manufactured in Germany between 4Q89 and 4Q91. Rather than commit to costly replacement of HDAs, IBM is waiting for them to fall before taking action, thereby putting users at risk,” said the Meta Group (Westport, CT) in its Metaflash newsletter, dated May 25, 1992.

It appears that the problem is caused by a build-up on the read-write head which causes unrecoverable data checks. All 3390 Model 2s manufactured in Germany during this period are suspect. IBM claims this 3390 Mode 2 problem is a European one, but the Meta Group indicates that about 500 German-built units were shipped to the US to satisfy demand that IBM’s San Jose plant couldn’t meet: “We estimate that among these 500 devices now installed in the US, there has already been some 30-40 HDA replacements.”
