History (1992): Agreement Between CIBA and Plasmon on Recordable CD Technology

To develop media guaranteed to last up to 50 years

A joint agreement to develop recordable compact disk media has been signed by Plasmon Data Systems (Near Royston, Hertfordshire, England), a manufacturer of write-once optical disk media, and Ciba-Geigy, the big Swiss chemical company.

In conjunction with the agreement, over $2.5million in venture capital has been raised from Ciba-Geigy, Larpent Newton, and clients of Rothschild Ventures and Grosvenor Managers Ltd.

The initial focus of the project will be to develop a special thin-film coating for recordable compact disks aimed at enhancing data life.

Our agreement with Ciba-Geigy is to develop a recordable CD which is guaranteed to last up to 50 years,” said PeterHelfet, MD, Plasmon.

Actually, with its “moth-eye” technology, together with proprietary manufacturing techniques, Plasmon guarantees for 50 years its 5.25-inch WORM media.
