R&D: Analyzing Power Management in NVMe SSD

Objective of paper is precisely accessing various factors that impact power utilization, identifying power conservable scenarios and their repercussions.

IEEE Xplore has published, in 2019 IEEE Pune Section International Conference (PuneCon) proceedings, an article written by Rachana Khamamkar, and Anushi Keswani, Pune, Maharashtra, India.

Abstract:The swiftly mounting demand for faster and efficient SSD storage presents before us numerous challenges. One of it being- achieving power efficiency. In this paper, the power management in Non –Volatile Memory Express (NVMe) Solid State Drives implemented over Peripheral Component Interconnect Express (PCIe) interface is analyzed and discussed. Compliance with NVMe and PCIe itself introduces varied aspects and intricate nuances of power and thermal management. While an ideal system harnesses the availability of more power to achieve greater performance, the power saving during idle or lower workloads must also be awarded consideration. However, managing power must additionally attempt towards minimizing counter-impacts on performance. The presented work throws light on the finer potentials of NVMe SSDs when weighed against its contemporaries. Achieving such pinnacles in terms of speed of operation, throughput, latency and volumes hints at trade-offs with power utilization. The objective of this paper is precisely accessing the various factors that impact power utilization, identifying power conservable scenarios and their repercussions. Thus, in an effort to best optimize power consumption in an NVMe SSD device, the elaborated work needs to be considered as part of the design.
